Will You Memorize Philippians with Me?
When I was in high school, I participated in a church-sponsored activity called Bible quizzing. We spent a year studying and memorizing books of the Bible. Each quarter, we attended "quiz-offs" where we would compete with other teams of students answering questions quickly and accurately. During those years, I memorized huge sections of Luke, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Titus, Philemon, and Jude. I can't quote them now, sadly. But, I did it... once.
In college, I'll never forget hearing a young woman recite one of the shorter epistles (I can't remember which one). She spoke those words with expression, not in the chant or sing-song voice that most people use when reciting. It was powerful to hear the entire flow of the book spoken so clearly, without seeing or vocalizing the verse and chapter breaks. But I told myself I didn't have time to do that myself.
Then last week, I listened to a podcast in which the preacher recited, again with expression, the entire book of Philippians. Hearing the entire book from start to finish (it took about twenty minutes) made so much more sense than reading it in small, bite-sized pieces.
I decided that I need to attempt memorizing again. I've chosen Philippians for three reasons:
1) because so much of it speaks to my current struggles,
2) because I've memorized so much of it before so I think will be easier than a less-familiar book, and
3) because it's short...ish.
I'll post each section I'm working on each week (one paragraph at a time), and then, if I can figure it out, I'll share a video update (I think that's called a vlog!) once a month.
Will you join me?
If not, will you at least check in and ask me how it's going?

She memorized and recited all of 1 John. I was in Jubilate (the singing group that she also participated in) and was in awe as she spoke. Still, I think of her voice as I read 1 John!
I memorized the book of James "just for fun" in college. It was a great experience!
A friend just asked me which version I have chosen. I really don't know yet. All the Bible memory I did growing up was from the New International Version, but I use English Standard Version now because our church does.
If you do it with me, don't feel like you have to do the same version. Use whatever you are most comfortable and familiar with.
I'm in, Joy, only I will be using the NLT. Us older minds have to make it as doable as possible!!!! This is a great idea!
I'm in. Great idea.
I remember the chapel you are talking about...I think she was reciting I Peter. The summer we shared an apartment, I started memorizing it after hearing her, but I stopped somewhere in chapter 2. I'll have to think about memorizing with you, but no promises yet. Age has made memorizing "easy come, easy go!" It sticks quickly like wet snow, but it melts away just as fast. Do you know what translation you intend to use yet?
On a side note, our pastor went through a large chunk of Philippians last summer and challenged us to read the rest on our own. He said one of the main themes of Philippians is missionary giving. I'd never looked at it that way before and loved reading it with that in mind.
Joy... I'm in. I think this is exactly what I need to do, although I'll admit I'm nervous!! I haven't memorized anything since college! But if my 4 year old can memorize 40+ verses, who am I?!
I think with everything going on in my life right now this is exactly what I need to do. I've never considered memorizing a whole book before, but because of all the spiritual struggles we've (or rather I've -- Tom has 100% complete peace!!) had, this is the best thing I can do.
Thank you for posting this!! I'll be following your lead, okay? At least trying to.... you might get it down more easily than I will since you've done it before, but I will try to keep up.
:-) (and if you have any memorizing tips... that would be great... I was the QUEEN of making up anacronyms in college, but that aint gonna work here! lol!)
Oh and if you get the chance to post how much you're starting off with, that'd be great for me to figure out how big of a chunk to bite off.
I can tell you I'm going to be reciting this in spin class in my head. I'm always reciting Isaac's verses when I'm about ready to pass out off the bike! hee hee
Awesome Wendy! I have been working on exactly what you asked for. I will post a chunk and some tips for memorizing tomorrow morning! And then I'll post a new chunk each week. I'm so glad you're doing it with me!
Can I say that I really, really wanted to ignore this post?!? But I can't, it is too much of a coincidence that I am currently in Philippians myself and had started trying to memorize chapter 2.
So, I'm in! Thanks :)
i'm totally game. did philippians a few summers ago, tried this afternoon--incredibly rusty. thanks for the challenge!
Angela, I really really wanted to ignore the idea too. But I know this was something God wants me to do. It's so much nicer to do it with some friends for encouragement and accountability! I'm glad you're in!
I too wanted to glaze over this post. I know what a looser I am with my follow through. But I want to be in.
Count me in.
It is worth the effort. I once memorized all of James. A few years later I re did it. I have done similar things with Romans 6, 7, and 8 and Ephesians (or was it Colossians) It has been a while. It gives the Holy Spirit some material in you to work with. Sorry for ending a sentence a preposition with.
I read this a few days ago and said "no, I can't, don't have the time.". Then I kept coming across the link and feel like the Lord is pressing me to do this. It will be challenging for me, but so good too. Do you have some pointers to get started?
Yay! And yes, I do, Mama Bear! I posted some ideas and the first section I'm tackling here: http://www.joyinthisjourney.com/2010/02/memorizing-philippians-week-1.html
I hope these help. I also plan to post updates and more tips as we go along.
Just found your blog through a fellow adoptive family blog...i am going to do it too! i started last night and have the first two verses memorized!
